About Us

Best place to improve your English

Background

It is not seen as easy to learn the English language by Sri Lankans. It is difficult to find time to practice, let alone find times to use in day to day life. Without practice and opportunity, people get stuck doing direct translations from Sinhala, their mother tongue, and this in turn means they lack in confidence and communication skills
At Monarch Higher Education Institute, we strive to make a change to this thought pattern! It is easy to see the struggle when people think in Sinhala and then try and change each word in to English. It is nearly always unsuccessful, and the learners always feel embarrassed when they can’t communicate effectively. This is why we at Monarch are on a mission to revolutionize the learning of English in Sri Lanka by using native, or fluent, English speakers from many countries, who are professional, qualified, and friendly with the students.
Language is used by us to convey emotions, attitudes, and feelings to our community, being fluent in a language are a mark of being part of a society. According to the founder of Monarch Higher Education Institute, Mr Buddhika Chathuranga, the best way to learn a foreign language is from a native, or fluent, speaker and watching how they handle the language in their everyday life. This is the exact thought that was behind the founding of Monarch Higher Education Institute on 6th January 2016 Monarch aims to make education:
  • Affordable
  • Effective
  • Smart
  • Enjoyable

What Poeple Said

I spent 6 weeks at the institute as a volunteering teacher and it was really amazing time! The lessons are fun as you are welcome bring your own ideas and activities. And the support from the local family we stayed with for free and the home-made meals couldn’t be better.

It was an amazing experience for me as an English teacher from Europe to discover a completely different culture. The students are really excited about the classes and we even became friends with some of them. You will never get bored in the hosting family with kids (six-year-old Sanu can speak English very well!).

More About Our Members

When I was taught English in school it was really boring. The teacher would give us words to learn and we were told to repeat those words by rote and do work in our books. There was no conversation, no interaction, no chance to practice all these new words and sounds. Even when I tried to go out and speak English to people in my area I would just get laughs at my bad grammar and awful attempts at pronunciation, I couldn’t find anyone who wanted to help me get better.
I was lucky enough to go to university and this is when everything changed. I met people who spoke good English and they were actually ready to help me! They’d correct my pronunciation, talk about new things so I’d have to learn new words and how to use them properly, and not laugh at me when I got things wrong. It was at this time that I realized how important speaking to people in the language you want to learn is, not just calling out words parrot-style between playing with friends at the back of class.
The urge to do something with this information is what led me to starting Monarch Higher Education Institute in 2016. I want to bring people from a range of backgrounds, both native English speakers and those who have had to learn English themselves, to Sri Lanka to work with our children to improve their English. Access to a good education in English was not
open to middle- and working-class families where I’m from, until I started Monarch. This stunted the dreams and damaged the aspirations of their children so I want to change that.
You are invited into my family home, where my mum will cook you the best Sri Lankan food you can find (I may be a bit biased!), and a five-minute walk away you will spend four days a week [link to Volunteer page] working with engaged and enthusiastic children at Monarch. My community will help you understand our culture, take you to our temples, invite you to their weddings, and take you on trips whenever they can.
There are high hopes for Monarch, we want to bring our style of creative teaching in a dynamic and interactive environment to more parts of Sri Lanka, in the future we want to give free classes in underprivileged villages, and one day to build a centre of excellence to support the dreams and ambitions of Sri Lanka’s amazing children.
